About "PageRank"

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. It can be said that PageRank is the sum of pages (website, webblog) which linked to a website or webblog and can be one way link or reciprocal link. The more webpage or webblog links to a webpage or webblog, the better PageRank will it has.

The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

PageRank was developed at Stanford University by Larry Page (hence the name Page-Rank) and later Sergey Brin as part of a research project about a new kind of search engine. The project started in 1995 and led to a functional prototype, named Google, in 1998. Shortly after, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., the company behind the Google search engine. While just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of Google's web search tools.

The name PageRank is a trademark of Google. The PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999 ). The patent is not assigned to Google but to Stanford University, the place where Larry Page and Sergey Brin develop their invention about search engine until finally they launched Google search engine.

A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Google assigns a numeric weighting from 0-10 for each webpage on the Internet; this PageRank denotes your site’s importance in the eyes of Google. The scale for PageRank is logarithmic like the Richter Scale and roughly based upon quantity of inbound links as well as importance of the page providing the link.

As mentioned on google webpage, PageRank is the heart of Google Search Engine. PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages' relative importance

From this brief explanation about PageRank or Google PageRank, it can be concluded that if your webpage or webblog want to be displayed on the first page of google search engine, your page must have good PageRank. It means that your traffic will increase rapidly.

Why should we join TECHNORATI?

Technorati [ http://www.technorati.com ] was founded by Dave Sifry and its headquarters are in San Francisco, California, USA. Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google, Yahoo and IceRocket. As of August 2007, Technorati indexes over 94 million weblogs.
[from: wikipedia.org]

Now, Technorati currently tracking more than 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. Technorati is the recognized authority on what's happening on the World Live Web, right now. The Live Web is the dynamic and always-updating portion of the Web. They search, surface, and organize blogs and the other forms of independent, user-generated content (photos, videos, voting, etc.) increasingly referred to as “citizen media.”
[from: technorati.com/about]

Even there had been some explanation about technorati as mentioned above, but the author itself never explained exactly what Technorati is, as he's stated in his private blog in January 21, 2004:

What is Technorati?

If you're one of the tens of thousands of people who use Technorati every day, you'll notice that most of our changes (on the new beta site so far have been under the hood. Changes to the body have been minimal. As a result, we've been scratching our heads because we've never explained exactly what Technorati *is*. For that matter, we've never explained much about what a "cosmos" is, either -- even though that's what Technorati finds in its searches.

So I thought it would make sense to ask you what Technorati is. Is it a search engine for blogs? A conversation engine? Or something else again?

Same with "cosmos." Is there a more self-explanatory word for what Technorati finds? Or a better way to say exactly what "cosmos" means?

Let us know. We'd like to hear from you. Thanks!
Posted by dsifry at January 21, 2004 2:56 AM

The Tehcnorati founder lets the technorati users to describe what technorati really is, because I think he still do not know what technorati will be in the future. What he did is to give the bloggers a place to communicate, share, organize and another activity which can help the bloggers each other to develop their blog better and more profitable I think.

Beside all of those things, technorati now become such an important thing that bloggers must have in order to popularize their blog. By join technorati, we can at least:
  1. Submit and claim your blog in technorati directory.
  2. Linking each other with other bloggers.
  3. Track and record our blog activity.
  4. Search and to be searched by other bloggers.
  5. Many others benefit that you can find in technorati.
Thats all my opinion about technorati for now, I think It's good for bloggers especially new bloggers to join this community. We can learn each other to make our blog better. Salute to technorati.

Very Good Reference For New Bloggers

PROBLOGGER.NET, was founded by Darren Rowse, a full time Blogger, in 2004 from his hobby. His life had changed when he decided to have a profession from his hobby, blogging. He said that in the early of his effort to build his first blog, he had many obstacles in his endeavor to make a blog because he worked three job simultaneously and was studying part time and blogged on the other side. Even at the time he didn't know what he did would change his life, he didn't stop and keep on struggling until he announced PROBLOGGER.NET.

PROBLOGGER.NET is dedicated to helping other bloggers learn the skills of blogging, share their own experiences and promote the blogging medium. He started it in September 2004 mainly because he wanted to keep a record of what he was learning about blogging for money. Since then he’s added over well over 3500 articles, tips, tutorials and case studies to his archives there.

As his blogs have grown in popularity and have begun to generate income Blogging has grown from a hobby (some would say an obsession), to a part time job through to a fully fledged business in recent times. He have slowly built his blogging into a income source that has enabled him to dedicate more and more time to the medium to the point where he is currently a full time blogger - a ProBlogger.

That's all a brief explanation about PROBLOGGER.NET. I acknowledge that he inspired me to keep on going in blogging when I had lack of inspiration to make my blog going. Thank you so much Darren Rowse.

What is Blog Feed?

Feed or in general term called as RSS feed had being used by bloggers in order to get popular in the net. More popular you are in the net, more traffic you have in your blog. It's make sense, isn't it? Here I try to bring you about feed definitions that I find from the net. I hope this is useful for you and bring to you the benefit of using feed.

These are some definitions about feed and RSS:

"A web feed is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an Internet aggregator. A web feed is also sometimes referred to as a syndicated feed."
[source & read more here: wikipedia.org]

"RSS (formally "RDF Site Summary", known colloquially as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually."
[source & read more here: wikipedia.org]

"RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication and Rich Site Summary. RSS is an XML-based format for content distribution. Webmasters create an RSS file containing headlines and descriptions of specific information. While the majority of RSS feeds currently contain news headlines or breaking information the long term uses of RSS are broad."
[source & read more here: rss-specification.com]

After we read about feed definition above, It is important for us to update our blog everyday, poorly at least once a week. How we build our blog feed so the others can read our updated blog? For this question, I suggest you to use FeedBurner as I write in my previous post. Why? Because It is easy to be done and it has many features that useful for publishing our blog. Blog Traffic

How popular is your blog? Why your blog must popular? What happen if your blog isn't popular?
These question are often become attention for the bloggers particularly for new bloggers. Blog popularity is one of parameters how success is a blog. Blog popularity is usually determined by how much traffic does it has in a time span such as daily, weekly, monthly even anually.

Blog traffic or generally called web traffic means the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site. It is a portion of Internet traffic. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. Bloggers should monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which parts or pages of their blog page are popular and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed mostly by people in a particular country.

Blog traffic can be analysed by viewing the traffic statistics found in the web server log file, an automatically-generated list of all the pages served. A hit is generated when any file is served. The page itself is considered a file, but images are also files, thus a page with 5 images could generate 6 hits (the 5 images and the page itself). A page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within the web site – a visitor will always generate at least one page view (the main page) but could generate many more. Tracking applications external to the web site can record traffic by inserting a small piece of HTML code in every page of the web site.

There are some types of information are often collated when monitoring web/blog traffic, these are the example:

  • The number of visitors
  • The average number of page views per visitor – a high number would indicate that the average visitors go deep inside the site, possibly because they like it or find it useful. Conversely, it could indicate an inability to find desired information easily.
  • Average visit duration – the total length of a user's visit
  • Average page duration – how long a page is viewed for
  • Domain classes – all levels of the IP Addressing information required to deliver Webpages and content.
  • Busy times – the most popular viewing time of the site would show when would be the best time to do promotional campaigns and when would be the most ideal to perform maintenance
  • Most requested pages – the most popular pages
  • Most requested entry pages – the entry page is the first page viewed by a visitor and shows which are the pages most attract visitors.
  • Most requested exit pages – the most requested exit pages could help find bad pages, broken links or the exit pages may have a popular external link
  • Top paths – a path is the sequence of pages viewed by visitors from entry to exit, with the top paths identifying the way most customers go through the site
  • Referrers; The host can track the (apparent) source of the links and determine which sites are generating the most traffic for a particular page.
Those are a little explanation about blog traffic and I'm sure that you understand why your blog must popular and what happen if your blog isn't popular. I think It's not too hard to be understood.

WHY BLOG

As a part of net world, blog has being developed so fast and perform a fantastic result for the developer and the blogger (blog user) itself. Started from individual, group to corporate users, blog has proved that it has powerful use in order to introducing people to the net world. By blog people can make them feel free like they own their own web page and make them have endurance in the web page where they do blogging.

So, what does exactly blog mean?
Here are some definitions about blog from the web which most represent in my opinion.

"A blog is a type of website that is usually arranged in chronological order from the most recent ‘post’ (or entry) at the top of the main page to the older entries towards the bottom."
[from: problogger.net]

"A blog (short for weblog) is a personal online journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs are defined by their format: a series of entries posted to a single page in reverse-chronological order.Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or reflect the purpose of the Web site that hosts the blog. Topics sometimes include brief philosophical musings, commentary on Internet and other social issues, and links to other sites the author favors, especially those that support a point being made on a post."
[from: searchwindevelopment.techtarget.com]

"Short for Web log, a blog is a Web page that serves as a publicly accessible personal journal for an individual. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author."
[from: webopedia.com]

"Blog (the same as "weblog") - a personal or business online journal or diary shared over the web. Publishing of a blog is "blogging". Entries in blog are called posts. Blogs are frequently updated and entries in the blog are arranged in a chronological order."
[from: bytescout.com]

"A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world.
Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.
In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new. Then they comment on it or link to it or email you. Or not.
Since Blogger was launched in 1999, blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others."
[from: blogger.com]

From all of those definitions, it is clear and no need to discuss that blog has been a part of our life. There are many other people saying the definition about blog that you can search in the net. The point is that people around the world can share anything with anyone in anytime as long as they have internet connection and blog.

The Net World

The Net World means everything involved in the network, a network here means internet network since internet had being used for last decade and growing sharply in the early of this century. This means that The Net World is something unlimited when all part of the world even the universe could be associated in the net.

Here are some definitions of "internet" from the internet:

"The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers)."
[from: searchwindevelopment.techtarget.com]

"The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked web pages and other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW)."
